Abstract Drawings Create Your Abstract Drawings Here Follow Along With Me Here In Easy Steps
What is the best way to start your creative drawing? Thumbnail sketches! By sketching small about 2 inches square, you can get a good “feel” for your abstract design and layout…you balance the white areas with the medium tones and with the black, your darkest tone. This is a much better approach than drawing in full scale. Why? Because you will probably want to make changes—so make them early with less effort in your thumbnail sketches.
Huh? Why do that? You need to draw your viewer’s eye into your abstract painting to finally come to rest on one of these 4 points. At one or two of these points, you create the most contrast which will become the focal point in your drawing or painting.

Let’s look at how nature can help us get our abstract ideas flowing: Here is an image of some trees but the image is upside down so you can’t actually “see” it is a tree. In the second image, it has been put through a Photoshop poster filter which reduces all the values from about 10 to 4 – so you can only see 4 values (value meaning the lightness or darkness of a color or tone.)
Best place is to have a peek at Mother Nature. You will find more nature ideas here than from anywhere else.Okay, to kick off let’s clear up one thing. What is the meaning of the word “abstract?” It is not part of our everyday reality of things or it cannot be seen as something representational. You OK with that definition?
