Drawing The Male Figure.

Look at the sketch below for reference. Connect the hips to the middle point. This does not correspond to any anatomical structure but it is a very convenient way to figure where the legs should start.

At this point you have almost all you need to start placing the bone structure of the character however there are first another two critical landmarks that I encourage you to find. One is the level of the shoulders which is approximately at one and a third head down from the top. The second landmark is the hip level which is approximately at three and a half heads from the top.

There is not a simple way to represent the complicated structure of the pelvic bone so for now we are going to be happy just approximating its shape using the aforementioned trick.

In this next image start placing the main joints of the arms and legs using the landmarks created before dividing the line in eight parts. Elbows at the level of the third head and wrists at the level of the midline.

Finally draw the shoulders using two balls. These should fit snuggly within the body width box we have drawn before.

The final step consists of re-tracing your puppet to give it an organic look. Now as I said this is a completely different skill set however it doesn’t hurt trying. Obviously you’ll have to delete the construction lines and try to keep a fluid drawing motion approximating the forms of the body. Use the image below as a reference.

Once the joints are established (easy!) it is time to build the cylinders of arms and forearms, and the legs and forelegs. Do the same also for the side and back view.

From this point onward it should become easier because we have already determined all the main landmarks of the body. Draw the bottle shaped chest volume. It looks like an elongated ball if you want. It starts from the SHOULDER level and ends approximately at the bottom of the third head.

To start off draw three vertical lines well spaced from one another, like in the image below. Simple enough so far, but it’ll get a bit more complicated soon 🙂

I have already tried to give the cylinders a more organic shape but you do not have to, you’ll work on the organic shape as a final pass of the drawing. Moreover learning the proper shapes of the body parts is a different chapter altogether. The point of this tutorial is to allow you to draw a proportionate male figure from scratch using only internal references.

So we will be drawing three male figures standing, one seen from the front, one from the rear and a side view. If you want to know how the final result is going to be go to the second part of the tutorial.

I have drawn in RED the position of the FEMORAL bone inside the leg for your reference. We won’t use it here because I think it is confusing instead we will immediately draw the cylinders of the arms and legs that have pretty much the same shape from every direction.

Now remember that each segment represents one head so by doing this you have not only determined essential landmarks but also determined the size of the head of your character.

Knee just above the sixth head line and ankles just above the bottom line.

We are going to draw a male figure based on a eight heads subdivision as you can see here so I want you to divide the lines in eight identical parts each. It is convenient to start from the middle, divide the main line in two and each half in two again and in two each resulting subdivision until you have exactly eight same length segments on each main line.

This is the first step in the direction of learning how to draw people, we hope you found this tutorial helpful. Feel free to upload your result drawing and leave a comment below.

As shown in the image below, take note of these points and start building the simplified skeleton of the character starting from the head.

Notice the other landmarks. The chin is exactly at one head, at the level of the second head there are the nipples of the chest and the navel is the the third head. At this level you’ll also have the elbows. The middle point coincides with the crutch and at the level of the sixth head you have the bottom of the knees.

Draw people – the male figure. It is time to put to good use what you have learnt in these tutorials figure drawing and drawing the human figure.

You’ll notice I started the red box at approximately one head and one third of a head. You’ll see why in a second.

At this stage before moving into drawing the bones of your character you have to decide how wide your character shoulders are going to be. The wider the more athletic and heroic the look.

In this tutorial I will take you STEP by STEP through the creation of the proportioned male figure seen in a front, rear and side view. We’ll start with a simple vertical line and move on building all the elements necessary to construct a proportioned human drawing.

A reasonable measure is 2 and a half heads for the frontal and rear views and approximately one head for the side, as I have drawn in red in the image underneath. So go ahead and carefully determine the width of your character.

Utilize appropriate grip, The first phase is always to master how in order to hold a pencil properly . Chiu recommends holding the particular pencil just like you could a new piece of charcoal, in addition to taking advantage of the particular side of the prospect to draw, rather as compared to the point. This assists keep your pencil sharper intended for longer. When covering significant areas, I shade along with my pencil perpendicular to be able to the line I`m sketching to get wide, very soft lines, he adds. With regard to details, I hold our pencil parallel to the lines to get razor-sharp , narrow marks. The just time I use the particular thing is when I`m working on intricate specifics

Master mixing up , Healy has a certain process for blending the girl coloured pencil work. The girl depends on an format , to check the contact form is proper before assigning to coloured pencil (it`s much harder to clear off coloured-in areas than a great outline). It also allows her plan where typically the highlights and shadows may fall. She then creates up colour using delicate layers. I love to be able to start out with smooth gentle layers to acquire a better notion of illumination placement, shadows plus the shade palette, she says. Following each layer she combines gently using the blending together stump. Once she features reached a stage she`s happy with, she steps on to the ultimate step: adding an put together . For this final part , Healy uses coloured pencils alone, and does not really blend with a stump.

Mix up covering techniques, There are a lot of different pencil sketching techniques relating to shade providing . Chiu uses two primary approaches. The first is definitely with all the outlines going in the identical direction. `This makes my personal shading appear more natural, and helps my particulars pop out from typically the lines I`m using regarding shading, he explains. The particular second method involves operating in patches of shade providing , to help define form . Patches of lines avoid the form, which support keep things in point of view , he says. It is furthermore great for backgrounds and even creating texture.

Short on time? That above, from character custom made Bobby Chiu, runs via some pencil drawing connected with action. For extra in-depth how you can composition to be able to how to capture light source and shadow, have a look at the art techniques article. Utilize right eraser, There happen to be a few various kinds of eraser, and each is appropriate to various things. You`ll definitely need a kneaded eraser. This has a new putty-like consistency (it`s occasionally known as putty eraser), and you knead this before and after make use of . A kneaded eraser will be best for lightly choosing up the coloured pen binding off the report . This works wonders any time correcting mistakes, or in case you`re deliberately lifting shade from an area including the eyes, says Healy. The gum eraser has the more solid consistency, and even is better if you`re trying to fully remove a coloured-in area. Vonseiten Reuden continues: I firmly believe in letting instinct take over in typically the creation process so My partner and i work with the underdrawing more as a criteria . Therefore the final end result varies.

Develop your skills with these kinds of pencil drawing techniques, regarding both graphite and colored pencils. These pencil attracting techniques from top performers will assist you to take your getting skills one stage even more , whether you`re using graphite pencil or coloured pencils. For many artists, pen drawing is the talent that introduced them to be able to the art world, plus even if you`ve shifted to a different channel , understanding how to pull with a pencil could help you transform your abilities elsewhere. These pencil attracting techniques cover many methods from the particular basics of mark-making to be able to advanced processes to drive you out of the comfort zone. When you`re a total starter , or just want in order to upgrade your kit, get a look at the guide to the very best pencils.

Try out different approaches to traces , The following drawing technique fears line weight. As effectively as demarcating different things , lines can help stress shadows. Thicker lines may fade and disappear in the shadows, which can aid convey the 3D type , explains Chiu.

Beyond that will , different artists have distinct approaches to lines -- you need to locate the style that`s best suited for you. I favor to use a specific outline in my a muslim , be it using thin sets out or bold outlines, ` says Healy. It can easily help pinpoint the audience`s eye to a selected area. In addition, it gives a new stylised look, if of which is what you are usually hoping to achieve. Chiu, however, prefers a diverse approach. I try to be able to avoid outlining my sketches because this tends in order to make things look toned and deadens the 3 DIMENSIONAL effect. Breaks and places in my lines present form in the lamps and shadows.

Find the right report texture, The surface consistency you`re working on may make a big distinction for the effects you could create. It is referred in order to as the grain or even `tooth` of the papers . A rough tooth is definitely more visible, and typically the ridges will grip typically the colour from your pencils. Which has a smooth tooth, typically the ridges are very great , and there`s less grasp . Healy finds this sort of paper provides a good easier surface for mixing coloured pencils, although the lady warns that it`s in addition easy to operate the shade off the surface.

Use a stump intended for soft blending, How an individual blend your work may have a big influence on the final result. With regard to a soft blended impact , try a blending stump. After each light level , I very gently combine the coloured pencils together with the stump, says US-based artist Jennifer Healy. Avoid push too hard or even the colour will adhere , making it more challenging in order to softly blend. I replicate this process as usually when i need. After several layers it produces some sort of very soft and sensitive look. This technique takes a little trial and problem , though. Healy warns that will if you blend also softly, the stump could pick up colour of which you`ve already layered for the paper.

Start off lightly and build coming from there, Once i start pulling , I plan and discover using loose lines, in addition to avoid committing too soon along with hard, dark lines, states Chiu. As I advance my lines will modify , so checking and rechecking my work is important . I darken my ranges and add details with the end. I do not give attention to one area regarding too long in order to avoid overdrawing. Begin with an underdrawing, Artist Tim von Reuden likes to start using a digital underdrawing of which he prints at 1 per cent Opacity. Preceding , you can view the underdrawing involving his sketch of the woman holding a staff members . He explains, I adore to keep it mild so that it provides a foundation rather than a new final image.

Draw on your individual experiences, Dip into the experiences to add an exclusive layer of authenticity in your piece, suggests Healy. This implies using something like a new memory, feeling or fragrance when building your work. Regarding example, the special sensation you experienced when sitting down down with a good friend in a coffee shop, or perhaps a memory of any years as a child experience. You can become abstract or use hyperrealism. Whatever you decide to choose makes typically the piece unique to a person . I`ve found that folks resonate with these items the most.

Use contrasting concepts, One particular drawing technique Healy utilizes in her work will be to use contrasting aspects within a piece associated with work, for instance, juxtaposing beauty and ugliness. I will use the beauty regarding colours, flowers, the real softness of skin or locks , as well as the female form. Items also tend to employ something which is opposite to be able to all of that, like bones, insects, sharp the teeth , or anything that may possibly provide discomfort to the particular viewer, she elaborates. `Somehow this provides a fascinating strategy to a piece. Specially when the `ugly` parts significantly harder to spot with first. To me this is the very stark representation involving what life is such as

Try combining pencils along with watercolour, While pencils in their own enables you to produce a wealth of various effects, it can become interesting to combine these other media. For instance , in her work, Healy loves to combine watercolour plus coloured pencils. It`s essential to begin with watercolour in addition to then layer coloured pencils on top, she clarifies , because pencils can generate a waxy surface that will repels liquid, and helps prevent the watercolour from placing into the paper. This specific is a fun approach to try out, the girl says. Both mediums include unique qualities and designs . Combining the two components provides an impressive medium all involving its own.

Rescue their life from your comfort zone, When these pencil drawing approaches should help you know the essentials in the method , sometimes you need to be able to toss the rules out and about of the window and discover what works for a person . There`s nothing wrong using stepping outside of typically the box if it signifies achieving the effect a person want, says Healy. Experimentation will occur when an individual step outside of that will box. But don`t get intimidated! The process is usually entirely fun.

Unify your shades , Having an uniform strategy to colour will assist take cohesiveness to your function . It`s a good thought to make sure of which your artwork has unifying colours, says Healy. `This consists of a specific colour palette, mood and also a way of spreading these types of over the entire art part . In addition, she recommends creating a harmonious foundation by using tinted report or adding a qualifications wash of colour (in paint). This will demonstrate through whatever you take a nap on top of this , thus giving it a great appearance of cohesion. Whenever I use coloured pencils, I`m fond of making use of tinted paper produced by simply Kraft.

Know if you should prevent , The majority of designers tend to tinker with their own work - even right after they`ve signed their brand . I can always discover something to change when I look hard more than enough , so it can end up being difficult to share when a new piece is truly done , says Chiu. However, be suspicious of overworking your item . `Eventually, I make a new conscious decision to place my drawing away plus start something new, he or she continues. `That`s when My partner and i consider my drawing performed

Categorise the fabric, Von Reuden describes the best way to add value in addition to shading to create more layers of depth plus weight. He admits of which , when drawing and re-creating fabric, the types involving wrinkles created can most be placed under about three separate categories: hanging/relaxed, stretched/tension, and scrunched/compressed. Hanging material tends to be shed and have a going appearance. Stretched fabric generates long lines, usually together with a point of help . Compressed fabrics bunch directly into each other, creating scrunched-looking areas.

Shield your paper, This is usually a valuable pencil sketching technique for beginners: set a piece of document under me to steer clear of smudging your drawing although you`re working. It appears clear , but it can become the downfall of the great piece of function ! Healy also prefers in order to mount her paper in a board, attaching that using a layer associated with matte medium. This allows keep things neat, plus provides an excellent surface in order to work.

Check and recheck, Before you will leave your site and go to tougher lines and detail job , it`s essential to ensure you have the correct type down. Chiu`s advice will be to check and verify again. I must nail along my drawing`s underpinnings ahead of I can add specifics . I really avoid questioning on the details: I would like to make sure every thing is symmetrical and seem right before writing better and harder lines. This individual also suggests considering your own work in a hand mirror or through a digital camera . Considering different vantage details is a great method to highlight if anything is definitely crooked. I constantly question myself, does this sense right? If anything looks off - even in the event that I can`t immediately place my finger on which that is #NAME? rely on my gut and troubleshoot my drawing before moving forward

Create material , Fabric can range by sleek and shiny to be able to matte and dull. Exactly how you shade it can help sell the concept of the material you`re seeking to depict. Just for this design , von Reuden is intending in order to capture the golden folds over of material found within the original image. This individual began by outlining the particular shapes and blocking out and about parts of shadow.
