Easy Drawings For Halloween.

Thank you for taking a look and your comment. As for the werewolf…I wish I had an answer….hey, come to think of it Frankie isn’t too happy either. Wonder if that says something about me. Glad it helped.

Great instructable! It is really helpful, thanks for posting. Why is your werewolf so sad, poor guy?

Here’s a fun activity for the kids this Halloween! Learn to draw all sorts of Halloween pictures with our simple step by step tutorials…

The line drawing establishes boundaries for colour and various objects in your painting. At another level it could also be used to define shadow shapes and texture but for our purposes, let’s treat this more like a colouring book. If you are drawing digitally, create a new layer above the existing one. You should be looking to use the rough sketch as a guide for the line drawing, however, do not feel bound to it, if you see areas for improvement continue to alter your character as you see fit. In other words unless you love part of your rough, do not feel the need to trace the drawing faithfully. If you have a better idea at this stage try it. If you are drawing digitally, all the more reason to try some ideas. There is always a few “undos” you can use.Hot Tip: Whenever you are trying to follow or trace a line, keep you eye focused on a spot just ahead of your pencil or if using a tablet, the on screen cursor. The longer and gentler the curve, the further you eyes can be. Of course this sounds a bit crazy, feel awkward, maybe even seem impossible but trust me, if you get the hang of this it is awesome. It works great for more than just drawing. If it sounds familiar this is something I borrowed from driving and racing motorcycles. Your body has a strange ability to follow your eyes. The amazing thing is I find this work when drawing on a desk top tablet or drawing on screen in the case of my tablet PC I have a strange ability to account for the parallax that occurs due to the distance between the drawing surface and the screen. I even use the same technique to use a jigsaw and sewing machine for smoother more accurate curves. Try this, some people will benefit right away others it takes more time to get use to. Just remember you don’t look at your front wheel to ride your bike. Some artist pay close attention to making sure the boundaries of all shapes are close, colouring book style, so the can take advantage of Fill or “Bucket” tools. You could try this for a more “comic book” or “cell painted” look.

Shadows are the first step in adding dimension to a rather cartoon like drawing. For this it is a good idea to create a new layer. If you are at you layer limit, dump your rough sketch layer. To create more of a painterly look this layer should be above the linework layer to start covering some of the out lines. Now before you start painting you will need to imagine a light source and where it is in relation to your objects. (A supplementary instructable here would be handy to explain lighting.) General rules to follow here: Dark colours/value recede or appear behind Lights colours/value advance or appear to be on top or in front. Most often a primary light source is coming from above and somewhere behind you, the viewer. Curved surfaces will darken as the roll or turn away from the viewer simply put edges of curved surfaces get darker as the get to the borders. These are of course a simplification of lighting principals but a lot can be accomplished by only applying these rules. In a simplified world of cartooning, this is all you may need to add dimension to your pictures. As for highlights, they appear in the opposite parts of your picture, and as a general rule, your highlights and shadows should be separated by an area of your base colour no matter how thin that area might be. To say the same thing differently, don’t let your highlights touch your shadows. Now let me just say I have distilled lighting principles into very simple terms and of course there is way more to it. By sticking to these simple rules anyone can experience some level of success with their drawings. That said, I have seen some amazing illustrations that used nothing more than these principles.Tip: Think about the texture of the surface you are working on. If it is hair try a brush that makes streaks. If it should look like a rough surface pick a textured brush. For smooth surfaces the air brush works. Also be mindful of how you apply the colour. If you are drawing hair, think about whether it is long or short, strait or curvy, your brush strokes should reflect that. Finally if you are digitally painting with pressure sensitivity, here is where I like to adjust my brush pressure to control opacity. If I am drawing on my phone with Sketchbook Mobile I reduce my opacity to 20-30% and build up the shadows or highlights.

I have also heard this called “layout” or an older term, “scaffolding”. I use to think this was merely a way instructional art books taught students how to draw, this is not the case. True, it may be a good way to show an object in a simplified form but it is not the sole purpose. Roughs can be useful in laying out multiple objects a composition, making sure the big picture is kept in mind right from the start. They can also be used to simply make sure the drawing will fit on the page. In truth, here are many reason to make a rough but for this demonstration the rough sketch is used more to get out a loose idea for the purposes of discovering the character, placing facial feature and simply laying a foundation to build on. Try to avoid “undo” or erasing at this stage of the drawing, the idea here is to keep moving forward and lay down something to work with. Be as loose or as sketchy as you are comfortable.  Keep the lines light so you are able to build them up if necessary to define alterations. If you watched the video you may have noticed that all of the characters were started with a head shape boundary. When I am playing around with ideas like in this demo, I sometimes challenge myself with some random shape and try to make some character that come to mind from looking at that shape. Other times I will draw a grouping of shapes to make up the features and then draw the head shape based on the feeling I get from the features. I recommend trying out both and even come up with other ways to brainstorm ideas.

I have included some samples of my other lessons to show that the drawing principals don’t change much. The same techniques can be use to draw in a more realistic mannor. Construct drawing (more meaureing involved when drawing from life or reference) Line drawing Shadow shapes and Highlights (Shadow shapes are defined) Detailing and Toning.

So whether you want to draw cartoons and caricatures or draw from life, the tools and techniques are really quite similar.I hope this help some of you. I appreciate your thoughts and comments. Thanks for taking a look.

Drawing is a handy hobby for all Makers. If you don’t draw, but think it would be fun, cool or useful to be able to draw.I did this for you.If you draw a little or even a lot, I hope you take a look and enjoy this.

First and foremost I consider myself a Maker. However, the first things I started making were pictures. As a kid pencils and paper were all I could get my hands on. By the time I was a teenager I was making sometimes breaking anything and everything.

Anyone can learn to draw simple characters and that is how a lot of people start a life long love of drawing.  If you ever utter the words “wish I could draw” I encourage you to try this. Of course you probably thinking “I wish I could draw.

..but not that” Point here is, with a sound approach and knowing the reason for each step, anyone, any age can begin to enjoy some success in drawing or painting in any medium. For this demo I used Sketchbook Pro 6.

as a side note : I have recently upgraded and have been having a lot of fun with V6. I have had a copy of Sketchbook since version 1 but haven’t really used it until the 2011 update came out. Been loving it since.

I have always liked Sketchbook over other drawing software because it seemed to be smoothest transition from traditional to digital drawing and painting. It took a few updates for Sketchbook to get some of the brushes/textures and features I was looking for but it’s all there now.

So if you haven’t tried it, download the free trial and give it a go. As for my input device I am using a rather old Graphire 4 tablet….I am very interested to see what all the fuss is about with the in the newer Intuos5 touch Medium Pen Tablet is! ;)Thanks for taking a look.

Music by:  Michael Chapman & The WoodpilesEnough of the random thoughts, lets get started.Learning to draw from text, pictures or video is still like trying to learn how to swim from your couch.I have included a video and would like to challenge all you “Wish I could drawers” to get pencil and paper and draw along.

Of course you can pause and replay. Be warned, you will show no signs of improvement by just watching it. Either way I hope you enjoy it.For instructional purposes and in the beginning I recommend keeping these steps separate and finishing each one before moving on to the next one.

As you become more familiar with each step  you may choose to bounce in and out of steps in various parts of the drawing for a variety of reasons. Rough Sketch Line drawing Blocking in base colours Shadows and Highlights Detailing,Tinting and Toning.

Detailing is no more than doing the same on a smaller level. This is how you tidy, refine your painting. You can zoom into an eye or ear and bring up the level of detail to your taste. I really like this idea because you don’t have to learn anything more than the first few steps to make a picture with the appearance of complexity and detail.Tinting is an application of transparent colour to slightly modify base colours. Because of the simplified approach to shading and highlighting there is a danger that some of the areas are looking a little monochromatic, areas where the shading appears to only be lighter and darker versions of the same colour. In a way you could think of tinting as applying makeup. Colours are applied with low opacity to influence the other colours. (Rosey up cheeks or redden around eyes)Toning is often done done at the end. It is a global application of shadows. To be more specific, in can be used to give a subtle overall roundness to a head by applying in large soft transparent shadow in the form of a sphere. It can also be use to make some objects appear to come forward or sit back into the picture plane by a similar application of soft transparent tones.Tip: Continue to be mindful of texture, at this stage I often look to see how things are going, if it looks too rough I will tint and tone with soft brushes or conversely if the opposite is true. Also reducing the opacity will allow you to ease into these often subtle adjustments.

The first step of the colouring or painting phase is called block in. Here it is just like kindergarten, try to stay in the lines. Here you will want to apply the base colours of the different shapes. The colour you choose should be a middle tone, not too dark or too light. In order to keep the line work as a guide, a new layer is created beneath the lines done in the previous step. In a traditional approach, care is taken to work the paint up to but not over the lines. It is normal for it to look cartoon-like regardless of how realistic your line work is.Tip: Try and use the larges brush you can. This is not only quicker and more efficient but in traditional painting it tends to lay down a more even coat or tone. Digitally if you have pressure sensitivity enabled use a brush you can adjust the size with pressure.

Master mixing , Healy has a certain process for blending the woman coloured pencil work. Your woman depends on an put together , to check the kind is proper before doing to coloured pencil (it`s much harder to clear off coloured-in areas than a great outline). It also assists her plan where typically the highlights and shadows can fall. She then forms up colour using delicate layers. I love in order to start out with smooth gentle layers to acquire a better thought of lights placement, shadows plus the coloring palette, she says. Right after each layer she combines gently using the blending together stump. Once she offers reached a stage she`s happy with, she steps on to the ultimate step: adding an format . For this final part , Healy uses coloured pencils alone, and does certainly not blend with a stump.

Short on time? That above, from character artist Bobby Chiu, runs by means of some pencil drawing connected with action. For even more in-depth suggestions about composition in order to how to capture light-weight and shadow, check out our own art techniques article. Or even , for inspiration, look into this kind of roundup of unbelievably reasonable pencil drawings.

Mix up covering techniques, There are tons of different pencil pulling techniques relating to covering . Chiu uses two major approaches. The first will be with all the ranges going in the exact same direction. `This makes my personal shading appear more natural, and helps my information pop out from the particular lines I`m using regarding shading, he explains. The particular second method involves doing work in patches of covering , to help define form . Patches of lines avoid the form, which assist keep things in point of view , he says. It is furthermore great for backgrounds and even creating texture.

Start off lightly and build by there, After i start pulling , I plan and discover using loose lines, plus avoid committing ahead of time along with hard, dark lines, claims Chiu. As I develop my lines will alter , so checking and rechecking my work is crucial . I darken my outlines and add details in the end. I do not give attention to one area regarding too long to stop overdrawing. Begin with an underdrawing, Artist Tim von Reuden likes to start together with a digital underdrawing of which he prints at 1 per cent Opacity. Preceding , you will see the underdrawing associated with his sketch of the woman holding a staff members . He explains, I adore to keep it mild so that it provides for a foundation rather than the final image.

Unify your colors , Having an uniform strategy to colour may help take cohesiveness to your function . It`s a good thought to make sure that will your artwork has unifying colours, says Healy. `This consists of a specific colour palette, mood plus a way of spreading these types of over the entire art part . In addition, she recommends creating a harmonious basic by using tinted document or adding a qualifications wash of colour (in paint). This will present through whatever you take a nap on top of that , thus giving it the appearance of cohesion. Whenever I use coloured pencils, I`m fond of applying tinted paper produced simply by Kraft.

Utilize the right eraser, There happen to be a few several types of eraser, and each is matched to various things. You`ll definitely need a kneaded eraser. This has some sort of putty-like consistency (it`s oftentimes known as putty eraser), and you knead that before and after work with . A kneaded eraser is definitely best for lightly finding up the coloured pen binding off the papers . This works wonders if correcting mistakes, or in case you`re deliberately lifting shade from an area including the eyes, says Healy. Some sort of gum eraser has a new more solid consistency, plus is better if you`re trying to fully get rid of a coloured-in area. Vonseiten Reuden continues: I highly believe in letting pure intuition take over in the particular creation process so We work with the underdrawing more as a criteria . What this means is the final outcome varies.

Draw on your individual experiences, Dip into your current experiences to add a particular layer of authenticity to the piece, suggests Healy. This implies using something like the memory, feeling or smell when building your work. Intended for example, the special experience you experienced when resting down with a buddy at the coffee shop, or even a memory of the the child years experience. You can end up being abstract or use hyperrealism. Whatever you decide to choose makes typically the piece unique to an individual . I`ve found that men and women resonate with these parts the most.

Utilize the proper grip, The first phase is always to master how in order to hold a pencil properly . Chiu recommends holding the particular pencil as you could a new piece of charcoal, and even taking advantage of typically the side of the guide to draw, rather compared to the point. This will help maintain your pencil sharper intended for longer. When covering significant areas, I shade together with my pencil perpendicular to be able to the line I`m attracting to get wide, gentle lines, he adds. With regard to details, I hold the pencil parallel to the lines to get sharpened , narrow marks. The just time I use typically the thing is when I`m working on intricate information

Categorise your own fabric, Von Reuden describes ways to add value in addition to shading to create additional layers of depth plus weight. He admits that will , when drawing and re-creating fabric, the types involving wrinkles created can almost all be placed under a few separate categories: hanging/relaxed, stretched/tension, and scrunched/compressed. Hanging material tends to be unfastened and have a moving appearance. Stretched fabric makes long lines, usually using a point of help . Compressed fabrics bunch directly into each other, creating scrunched-looking areas.

Develop your skills with these kinds of pencil drawing techniques, with regard to both graphite and female pencils. These pencil pulling techniques from top performers can help you take your painting skills one stage additional , whether you`re using graphite pencil or coloured pencils. For many artists, pad drawing is the ability that introduced them to be able to the art world, in addition to even if you`ve advanced to a different method , understanding how to bring with a pencil may help you transform your abilities elsewhere. These pencil attracting techniques cover from typically the basics of mark-making in order to advanced processes to press you out of the comfort zone. We`ll also provide advice on the equipment and materials you require to know, such because blending stumps, paper choices , and different erasers. In case you`re a total newbie , or just want to be able to upgrade your kit, get a look at our own guide to the very best pencils.

Find the right report texture, The surface consistency you`re working on can make a big distinction towards the effects you can easily create. This is certainly referred in order to as the grain or perhaps `tooth` of the report . A rough tooth is definitely more visible, and the particular ridges will grip typically the colour from your pencils. Which has a smooth tooth, typically the ridges are very good , and there`s less hold . Healy finds this sort of paper provides a great easier surface for mixing coloured pencils, although your woman warns that it`s in addition easy to perform the color off the surface.

Consider different approaches to traces , Another drawing technique issues line weight. As effectively as demarcating different things , lines can help stress shadows. Thicker lines may fade and disappear in the shadows, which can assist convey the 3D type , explains Chiu.

Beyond of which , different artists have various approaches to lines instructions you need to discover the style that`s best for you. I favor to use a specific outline in my art , be it using thin shapes or bold outlines, ` says Healy. It may help pinpoint the audience`s eye to a specific area. In addition, it gives some sort of stylised look, if that will is what you happen to be hoping to achieve. Chiu, however, prefers a diverse approach. I try in order to avoid outlining my sketches because this tends in order to make things look toned and deadens the THREE DIMENSIONAL effect. Breaks and spots in my lines demonstrate form in the lamps and shadows.

Use a stump intended for soft blending, How an individual blend your work can easily have a big effect on the final result. With regard to a soft blended result , try a blending stump. After each light coating , I very gently combine the coloured pencils together with the stump, says US-based artist Jennifer Healy. May push too hard or even the colour will adhere , making it tougher in order to softly blend. I replicate this process as frequently when i need. After a lot of layers it produces some sort of very soft and sensitive look. This technique needs a little trial and mistake , though. Healy warns of which if you blend as well softly, the stump may pick up colour of which you`ve already layered for the paper.

Safeguard your paper, This is usually a valuable pencil attracting technique for beginners: place a piece of document under me to prevent smudging your drawing whilst you`re working. It appears clear , but it can get the downfall of the great piece of do the job ! Healy also prefers in order to mount her paper about a board, attaching that using a layer associated with matte medium. This will help keep things neat, plus provides a good surface to be able to work.

Know if you should quit , The majority of performers can tinker with their own work - even following they`ve signed their label . I can always get something to change when I look hard more than enough , so it can get difficult to share with when some sort of piece is truly done , says Chiu. However, be suspicious of overworking your part . `Eventually, I make the conscious decision to place my drawing away plus start something new, they continues. `That`s when We consider my drawing completed

Rescue their life from your comfort zone, Although these pencil drawing methods should help you recognize the essentials with the moderate , sometimes you need in order to toss the rules out and about of the window and discover what works for a person . There`s nothing wrong using stepping outside of the particular box if it implies achieving the effect a person want, says Healy. Learning from your errors will occur when an individual step outside of that will box. But don`t get intimidated! The process is usually entirely fun.

Check and recheck, Before you begin more powerful lines and detail job , it`s essential to be sure to have the correct kind down. Chiu`s advice is usually to check and check out again. Need to nail lower my drawing`s underpinnings prior to I can add specifics . I really avoid questioning with the details: I need to make sure anything is symmetrical and appear right before writing tougher and harder lines. They also suggests taking a look at your current work in a reflection or through a digicam . Considering different vantage factors is a great approach to highlight if anything will be crooked. I constantly inquire myself, does this sense right? If anything looks off - even in case I can`t immediately place my finger on which this is #NAME? rely on my gut and troubleshoot my drawing before carrying on

Create textile , Fabric can range coming from sleek and shiny to be able to matte and dull. Precisely how you shade it can help sell the concept of the material you`re seeking to depict. In this design , von Reuden is attempting in order to capture the golden folds up of material found within the original image. They began by outlining the particular shapes and blocking away regions of shadow.

Try combining pencils using watercolour, While pencils in their own may be used to make a wealth of various effects, it can become interesting to combine associated with other media. For instance , in her work, Healy wants to combine watercolour plus coloured pencils. It`s significant to get started with watercolour plus then layer coloured pencils on top, she describes , because pencils can produce a waxy surface that will repels liquid, and inhibits the watercolour from placing into the paper. This specific is a fun strategy to try out, your woman says. Both mediums include unique qualities and construction . Combining the two components makes a medium all involving its own.

Use contrasting concepts, 1 drawing technique Healy makes use of in her work is usually to use contrasting principles within a piece involving work, for instance, juxtaposing beauty and ugliness. I will use the beauty involving colours, flowers, the gentleness of skin or curly hair , plus the female form. I am going to also tend to employ something option opposite to be able to all of that, like bones, insects, sharp the teeth , or anything that may well provide discomfort to the particular viewer, she elaborates. `Somehow this provides an unique principle to a piece. Particularly when the `ugly` parts very much harder to spot with first. To me it is a very stark representation regarding what life is such as
