If you want to draw clean, sharp eyebrows, shade the area above the eye and blend it out first before you start. It doesn’t have to be perfect. This step eliminates the amount of shading and blending you’ll have to do later on.

Make slight changes in the hair direction and amount of curve. Join some hairs together by their ends as well.

Grow them back. The first thing you should do to fix over-plucked eyebrows is to stop plucking and waxing. The best way to achieve a good brow shape is to let them grow out for about a year or so. Using a brow razor to shape will help stimulate growth.

[11] If you absolutely can’t stop tweezing, let your brows grow for at least three weeks before plucking again.[12] Too-frequent plucking can damage your follicles, causing permanent damage.[13]

If you used the shadow lining technique for your outline in step 1, you will notice that it has blended in well and there should be no need to erase it.

Brush on a thin layer of cosmetics lacquer or sealant over your new eyebrows. The sealant will keep your drawn on eyebrows smudge free for up to 24 hours. If you find that the sealant gives your brows too much of a shine, add another dusting of translucent powder.

The powder will mattify and remove the sheen.[6]

If you are using an eyebrow palette with several different shades of brown, use the darkest colours at the center of your brow, as that is generally where you will find the most hairs.

Most beginners, when learning how to draw their eyebrows for the first time, will usually start shading from the inner corner of their brows and move outwards from there.

Do not outline it like the image below. It will be very obvious in your final drawing and a complete pain to erase!

It’s actually kind of your choice. You should choose a good quality brand. If you go to department stores like Macy’s, you can go to a bunch of makeup counters and sample eyebrow pencils to choose which one you like best.

b. Using the same ruler, align it with the corner of your nose and through the center of your eye – this will mark the highest point of your eyebrow shape, or where the high point of your arch should be.

We’re going to draw hairs going in several different directions. Using a sharp 2B pencil, let’s start by drawing a single row on the bottom and go from left to right. These hairs grow in the upward direction and start pointing downward near the end of the eyebrow.

Prepare your canvas. Before applying any makeup, your face should be cleaned, moisturized, and dried. If you wear a full face of makeup, make sure the following steps are finished before starting your brows: Begin with a layer of makeup primer.

Primer will prevent your makeup from smudging and help it to last longer. This is extremely important when trying to maintain the illusion of natural eyebrows on bare skin. Sponge on a light layer of foundation.

Follow up by adding concealer to any problem areas you want to cover up. Blend well with a makeup sponge or your fingertips. Many people use only bronzer or only blush, but if you use both start with the bronzer.

Once these elements are ready, you can move on to drawing your brows.[1]

It is way more difficult to see your brow shape and learn how to draw your eyebrows if you have hair growing all over the place. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

Some brow guides even recommend that you use “featherlike strokes”, so you might need to have a bit of patience during this stage of learning how to draw your eyebrows.

Eyebrow hairs are usually shorter at the end of the eyebrow and as a rule of thumb, the lighter the hair, the shorter it is.

If you are using an eyebrow pencil and don’t have a few shades to choose between, then practise lightening the shade by going with a softer touch. If needed, use a clean brush or spoolie to help with your blending

Well, this is 2018, and eyebrows have been making a huge, huge comeback in the past few years. Leave out the eyeliner, mascara, and eyeshadow if you’re in a rush, but you should never leave the house without drawing your brows.

Avoid overextending your eyebrows’ tail. Hold an eyebrow pencil from your nostril diagonally to your brow. The point where the pencil intersects with your brow ridge is where your eyebrow should end. Extending beyond this spot will make your eyebrows look less natural.

You can draw a guide with straight-edged outlines along the shape of your brow, but take note this will make your brows look more harsh, and should only attempted if this is the look you prefer.

Straight brows popularised by Korean celebrities have become the hottest brow trend in recent years. This trend isn’t suitable for everyone though, and would be better worn by those with longer or oval-shaped faces.

In this step, I didn’t add any new hairs. I just looked at which ones were overlapping and used the sharpest edge of my 4B mechanical pencil to darken those areas. This will make the eyebrow look more interesting.

Eyebrow length varies from person to person, but the average length is only slightly longer than the length of the eye itself.

Fill in patches. Many people have small bald patches within their eyebrows, but chronic over-tweezers may find them particularly worrisome. Use an eyebrow pencil or dust on powder with an angled brush.

Pick a pencil or powder that is close to the same shade as your natural eyebrows. Layering with both can create a more natural look. When using a fine pencil, fill in with multiple light strokes to mimic the look of individual hairs.

Delicately brush off excess pigment with a clean makeup brush. Add another layer of pigment and do another brush-off. Repeat this process until your eyebrows are as dark as you’d prefer. Set your brows with gel to keep the makeup from rubbing off as you go about your day.

Otherwise, you can simply use dots at the more prominent points as a much rougher guide, leaving your edges of your brow to be more natural looking.

Drawing eyebrows, however, can be pretty daunting for beginners. You want something thick enough to give your face more character, but you don’t want to look like a cartoon character either.

Using a ruler or any long, straight edge, use your nose to measure where the head of your brow should begin, where the arch should be, and where the tail of your brow should end.

Here’s where we step in (gently), and show you how to draw eyebrows.

While that’s great for cartoons and manga, it’s quite unrealistic.

Before you start filling in your brows, we recommend also that you brush your eyebrow hair downwards with a spoolie so you will have a clearer idea of where bald spots and sparser areas are. Concentrate on those areas when you’re filling in your brows.

d. Make sure that the tail of your brow does not end higher than where the head of your brows begin, as this might make your eyes look droopy and lower.

How to draw an eyebrow guide (for arched and curved shapes):

Now, add an additional row or two. Remember to draw hairs at the beginning of the eyebrow longer than ones at the end.

You should try to get a color close to your hair color. If you have lighter hair, you should use a light shade of brown.

Instead, go for something that’s a shade lighter than your natural black hair, such as charcoal, ash-gray, dark gray, or even dark brown. Of course, pick something that’s still generally black-based so it still matches your hair.

Pat translucent powder over your eyebrow area. Powder will help set your foundation and concealer. It also helps to ensure your skin is nice and dry. If there is too much moisture when you draw them on, your eyebrows may start to run. [2]

Okay, last step! We just added some shadows inside the boundary of the eyebrow. Now it’s time to draw shadows around the outside. If your light source is coming from the top (like mine), draw your shadows directly below the eyebrow and/or sides only. Subtle shadows will do. Avoid hard edges!

Can I dye my eyebrows with regular DIY hair dye from the store?

c. Lastly, measure from the corner of your nose and along the outer edge of your bottom eyelid. This marks where the tail of your eyebrow should be.

Hey guys! In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to draw realistic and subtle eyebrows. Learn how to draw eyebrows that compliment a drawing instead of sticking out like a sore thumb!

Those with square faces may find that the curved brow shape will be ultra flattering on them, as it provides some balance and softens up the angles.

Freehanding your eyebrow can be pretty tricky and intimidating for beginners, so we do not recommend beginners try that. Rather, to properly learn how to draw your eyebrows, start off with rough shape guide.

This will instead give you a fiercer look, and make your brows look more stilted.

Brush eye shadow onto your eyebrows. Lightly load an angled cosmetic brush and drag it along your brow. Start from the outside edge and move in towards your nose against the hair grain. Unlike when you’re working from scratch, eye shadow here is meant to create the illusion of thickness with your natural brow hairs.

You will be working with a much lighter shade here. If your skin is pale and your hair is light, use a neutral taupe. If your skin and hair are darker, use a neutral dark brown instead.[8]

At this point, the eyebrow still looks like it’s sort of pasted onto the face. We’ll fix this in the next step.

Get a thin razor and go along the out sides to shape them. You could also get them professionally done.

Do not make the mistake of drawing a single row of hairs in an attempt to cover the entire eyebrow. More on that later.

It depends on your particular preference. You can ask a professional at your local store for assistance in picking one out.

I’m not adding any more hairs on the left side of the eyebrow because I don’t know if that will be enough yet. I’ll be able to decide later when I draw the upper portion of the eyebrow.

If you think it still looks pasted on, use a sharp H pencil to draw really light hairs around the top and side.

Build the colour up slowly, rather than trying to get your desired darkness in as short a time as possible. Trust us, the result will be much more natural looking.

You probably don’t need to draw on your eyebrows if they’re that bushy. You can brush your eyebrows up and carefully trim them with nail scissors to reduce the bushiness.

Time to draw the upper portion of hair. I usually draw the first row really thin/light and then increase the thickness/darkness with the following rows.

Keep your eyebrows well-shaped. Even if your natural brows are all but invisible, it is important to keep them well-groomed. By keeping your eyebrows professionally shaped, you will have more definition to work from.

Wax or thread them on a regular basis.[7] Even if you aren’t happy with your natural eyebrow shape, try taking as many cues from it as possible when drawing on new ones. Drawn on eyebrows based on real brows will look much more natural than brows created freehand.

It’s difficult to know how to draw your eyebrows if you don’t have an idea of how you want the end result to look like. Think about whether you would like it straight, arched, or curved.

They’re great for heart-shaped and round faces, as it provides angularity and definition.

You will need to select the checkbox above to allow us to email you.

It’s up to you how you want to design your eyebrow, so you can add more hair if you want.

Add an additional layer or two. As the ends of the hairs start coming in contact with the upward pointing hairs, allow your strokes to slowly merge into the same direction.

With an H pencil, use my shadow-lining technique to outline the shape you want the eyebrow to have. If you use this technique, your outlines will blend in perfectly when you draw the actual hairs later.

What if your eyebrows are bushy and you can’t see a natural shape?

You want to avoid having any harsh demarcating lines in your brow colour, so make sure that your blending game is strong – which will help with the rest of your makeup anyway.

Most of us have black hair, but that doesn’t mean that you should automatically go for black eyebrow shades.

Go slow, and make small strokes. Try to get a natural shape and get an eyebrow pencil that could mimic hairs.

It depends on how dark your skin is. If your skin is lighter, use lighter brown, if your skin is darker, use darker brown.

Keep your strokes fairly thin. I always try to keep the tip of my pencil as sharp as possible for each stroke. Once your pencil starts to become blunt, individual hairs will blur together and eventually disappear as they blend in with each other.

Use a pencil to add individual “hairs.” Use a black-brown eyebrow pencil sharpened to a fine point. Draw small lines from the bottom of your eyebrow outline feathered away from your nose. A few stray “hairs” that don’t perfectly line up with your brow outline will keep your eyebrows from looking too perfect and more like real eyebrows.

a. With the ruler aligned vertically straight along the corner of your nose, mark out a straight line – this will be where the head of your brow should start.

Thicker and more luxuriant brows are in, but that doesn’t mean you should leave your brows growing willy-nilly.

If you rewound the clock a decade or so, you may have been able to get away with not bothering with your eyebrows in your daily makeup routine.

As for the shape, there’s no one correct way. Just play around with different shapes while following along the brow bone.

Instead of colouring in your brows, use short, flicking strokes with the brow product to replicate the natural look of individual hair strands in your brows.

I just want to send a big thank you out to all of you guys who take the time to leave a comment or connect with me via email or Facebook. Your kind messages remind me that what I do makes a difference and helps give me the motivation to keep going! You guys are awesome! 🙂

With your fingers, put some pressure along your eyebrow and move the skin up and down. You’ll find that your eyebrows grow along the brow bone. The brow bone is the protruding area directly above your eye socket. When you don’t know where to draw an eyebrow, visualize the eye socket around the eye.

Arched brows are a cornerstone of the classic, femme fatale look. High arches have fallen out of favour with Asian women since the 1990’s, but lower and gentler arches are still in-trend.

Your eyebrow shape can really play a huge role in the image you portray of yourself to the world. Take a look at the comparison pictures below.

If you see any inconsistencies in value or you think you’d like a darker eyebrow, go over some hairs with a sharp 4B mechanical pencil and darken overlapping hairs or individual hairs that you want to stand out more than others.

Be very careful not to overdo it. It’s hard to erase thin lines. If you do need to erase any hairs or make them appear lighter, pinch your kneaded eraser until it looks as sharp as a knife and then press it directly on the hair to lift a layer of graphite away.

Define your main brow shape with an eyebrow pencil. Use your existing eyebrows as a guide when determining a shape. Fill in your brow using small, light strokes until you’re happy with your eyebrows’ shape and thickness.

It is very important to match your brow pencil closely with your hair and complexion.[9] Try to find one that is close to your natural hair color but a few shades darker. If you dye your hair, it may look more natural to match the hair on your head rather than your existing brows.

Before drawing your eyebrows on, brush translucent powder over the area to help set and dry your skin. Mix various shades of eyeshadow until you match your current hair color, then draw it onto your brow ridge with a brush to create the basic eyebrow shape. Draw on individual hairs with a black-brow eyebrow pencil. Finally, brush a sealant over your eyebrows to keep them smudge-free for 24 hours! The structure of this tutorial will be similar to my previous one on eyelashes: examples with explanations and then application in a step by step format.

From the center moving towards the two outer edges of the brows, the shade should be getting lighter and lighter. The inner and outer edges of our brow is usually where your hairs naturally get thinner, so drawing your brows should attempt to replicate that.

We want to draw hairs that point in 3 main directions: Up, down and from left to right (or right to left if you’re drawing the left eyebrow).

Slow down and carefully plan the placement of each stroke you make and try to make them as unpredictable as possible. Avoid predictable patterns like the ones below.

This video gives a good tutorial on finding your ideal eyebrow shape and then filling in the brow with pencil.

We cannot emphasize blending enough for any principle of makeup application, not just those learning how to draw their eyebrows.

For light eyebrows, it is better to use a powder product to fill them in, as it can be used a lot lighter than a pencil or gel, so it will look more natural.

Often, black shades can appear too harsh when you use it to fill your entire eyebrow. Even if you had properly mastered how to draw your eyebrows, jet black shades itself may look too intense for our skin colour.

You can tell how Sammi Cheng and Song Hye Kyo give off entirely different vibes in the side-by-side pictures, even though only the shape of their brows had been tweaked.

Eyebrow hairs also come in a variety of shapes such as the ones below. Find the right combination/grouping to get your desired look or just go with the flow.

Your ultimate goal is to get a smooth transition from upward pointing to downward pointing hairs.

My eyebrows are so light and sparse that it looks like I have no eyebrows, help?

Can you spot what’s different in the image for this step? I’ve added shadows in the forest of hair. If you shaded the skin as light as mine, use a 2B pencil to shade over your entire eyebrow. Don’t press too hard.

Create the basic shape with the eye shadow mix. Use a small slanted makeup brush to form the base of your eyebrow. Use your brow ridge as a guide for your eyebrows’ shape. Drawing drastically away from your brow ridge will make your eyebrows look less realistic.

Otherwise, you can experiment with different shapes before deciding which looks right for you. If you don’t have a small enough makeup brush, you can use a cotton swab instead.[4]

Use tinted brow mascara. Just like mascara for eyelashes, brow mascara (sometimes called brow gel) enhances eyebrows by coating individual hairs, making them appear longer, darker, and more defined. Pick a gel that’s closest to your natural hair color, and brush it on going from your nose to your arch.

Brow mascara also works to shape your eyebrows and keep them in place all day.[15]

If you have coloured hair, then you may have to start experimenting with your eyebrow colours. The general rule of thumb is to get a shade that somewhat matches at least the shade intensity of your hair, if not the actual colour.

Mix black and brown eye shadows together to closest match your current hair color. You will be using this mixture to draw on the base of your brow. A combination of black with one or more shade of brown tends to look the most natural.

A little bit of black powder in a light brown mix will make the lighter shade look more convincing, while some brown will soften the harshness of pure black.[3]

The curve is the much, much gentler version of an arch, and gives your face a more youthful, girl-next-door look.

When you are finished, compare both eyebrows straight on to ensure they are fairly symmetrical. Don’t worry about any minor differences as no one’s natural eyebrows match perfectly. If you’re having trouble freehanding your eyebrow’s basic shape, try using an eyebrow stencil as a guide.

[16] These tools are widely available at most stores that carry cosmetics. If you are trying to achieve a natural look, avoid creating sharp angles or boxy points. If your eyebrow’s natural arch is quite dramatic, however, you shouldn’t smooth it down.

When filling in the middle portion of the eyebrow, focus on drawing hairs that flow in the direction that seems most natural to you.

Yes, but the results often do not turn out well. There are more expensive eyebrow dyes you can order that work much better. It might be better to just fill your eyebrows in with a temporary filler.

Take note that this guide is only relevant to those who are intending to create an arched or a curved eyebrow shape. If you’re going for a straight brow, this guide will not be applicable.

Eyebrows frame the face and are an important part of how we express emotions. Because of this, subtle changes to their shape and color can drastically impact someone’s look. Whatever your reason for drawing on your eyebrows, there many different techniques you can use to achieve the perfect look!

If you’re not sure how to do it yourself, Daily Vanity strongly recommends that you get your brows shaped by a trained brow professional. Tweezing, threading, or waxing – it’s up to you!
