How To Draw Anime Noses.

Use matting, I prefer using mats with the framing of my drawings. If an acidic matting is use, it must be backed by an acid-free material that will act as a territorial barrier between the matting and the drawing. There is a standard thickness that is compulsory and favored in the industry for this buffer or barrier. The same consideration should be given to the backing of your drawing. If your drawing or art is backed or mounted on an acid-free material, the barrier is avoidable . Some framers use a foam-core board for backing.

The glass should be exceptionally clean and must be tested for finger prints, dust, hair, or other far-off material, before securing it lastingly in the frame. You could have to do this more than once.

It`s how your completed artwork is presented that makes all the difference. Although it`s teasing to purely place your drawing in a ready-made frame, there are several things that you should take in study before framing your artwork to insure it is adequately shielded over the years.

Some defining feature of anime and manga noses are that they tend to be small and pointy with details like the nostrils often not drawn at all. Of course there are also few variation to the style.

One way to draw an anime nose that is still semi-realistic is by using light and shadow to create a hint of the noses shape.

Here is a selection of examples of different styles of mouths and noses. Several of these can be used for either gender, so I didn’t bother separating them. ^_^ Notice that with some styles, the mouth is defined by only a thin, straight line, while with other styles, the lips are more well defined. Anime and manga mouths are not often very large, unless the character is yelling or shouting, so keep them relatively small. The noses vary quite a lot, as well; some are drawn as wedges, some are defined solely with shading, and some are detailed enough that you can see the nostrils. Female characters will tend to have smaller, less defined noses, while male characters will often have longer, angular noses.

In most common lighting conditions the nose will usually have a shadow underneath and to the side that is opposite of the light source. So if your are drawing the nose from the front view and your light source is coming form the top left you should draw the shadow on the bottom and right sides of the nose. If the light is coming from the bottom then you would shade the top part of the nose.

The lower half of the face consists of a series of contrasting curves. Notice that how in both pictures, the nose curves in towards the face, then curves back slightly out right above the upper lip. The upper lip curves inward, and the lower lip curves outward. The chin is not just a straight line; it is round and curves outward.

For the 3/4 view you can completely shade the bottom part of the nose unless the light is coming from underneath in which case you would shade the top part.

For the front view draw a shadow on one side or a vertical dash in the middle that just gives a hint of the nose. Depending on how simplistic you want the style to be you can even not draw the nose at all in this view.

For a more realistic looking nose draw it closer to traditional art. With more curvy lines and greater attention to detail. You can show the nostril/nostrils in all views.

For the side view first draw the main outline of the nose. Draw the nostril slightly above the tip of the nose with and draw curved line just behind the nostril to indicate its shape.

Drawing the common anime/manga nose is fairly simple but it’s also a good idea to know how to draw a more realistic looking nose as well. So lets start the tutorial with that.

Drawing the nose and mouth for a profile is more difficult than drawing them from the front or at a 3/4 view. The main reason for this is because you can’t get away with not defining the lips as much. ^_^ You have to draw them in, rather than using just simple straight lines. Despite the difficulty, if you get it right, it can look really nice. The main thing to consider is the curve of the nose, lips, and chin. The upper lip curves inward, and lower lip (which is slightly receded on the face) curves outward. It may take some practice before you can get it to look like the character isn’t making a weird face or puckering their lips or anything like that. ^_~

For the front view draw both sides of the bottom of the nose exactly identical and give a hint of the noses overall shape on the side that would be opposite to wherever the light source in the picture would be.

For the side view you can draw the nose almost the same as in the first example but make the tip slightly more pointy.

Anime- and manga-style noses and mouths are pretty straightforward, so rather than taking you through various styles step by step, I have several examples for you to use. Here is your basic anime- and manga-style nose and mouth. It consists of three basic simple shapes: a wedge for the nose, a long, thin line for the mouth, and a shorter line to define the lower lip (this lower line is not always included, though). In frontal views like this, you can get away with using very few lines to define the nose and mouth. The size and shape of each feature varies with each character. Always make sure the features line up; to help you line them up, draw vertical guidelines as shown. In the second picture, the face is turned to the side, but the features are still aligned along the curved guideline that represents the center of the face.

Here are some more examples of noses and mouths, drawn at a profile. Even though the proportions and expressions change, they all stick to the same basic shape as mentioned above. When drawing faces at this angle, be careful not to make the noses really pointy and the face too flat. Make sure the features curve properly, or the face is not going to turn out looking right.

That concludes the examples for this tutorial but you can experiment with different styles in different views or different degrees of realism to come up with a style that you like.

For the 3/4 view again start by drawing the main outline of the noses shape. Indicate the tip of the nose with a curved line just below the main outline of the nose. Depending on the angle you are drawing at you may draw one or both nostrils. Usually you can just give a slight hint of the nostril that is farther away.

This tutorial explains how to draw anime and manga noses from the front, side and 3/4 views in different styles.

To draw the most common anime nose from the side view draw what looks like a vertical check mark and don’t draw the nostril at all. Do the same for the 3/4 view but draw the check mark a little more narrow to indicate a different angle. You can also draw a small curve or a dot to indicate the tip of the nose and not draw the top curve.

This style may be more appropriate if you want to create somewhat serious looking artwork but still retain the anime or manga look. It’s also sometimes used when showing closeups of character’s faces.
