How To Draw Easy Lips

Draw a simple horizontal line sketch for the middle of the lips. Make the two line edges sketched upwards to show the smiling expression.

If you keep your hand loose, you should get accurate results. After all, a sketch is a loose handed drawing. if you grip your utensil tightly, it won’t turn out too good — if you mess up, you won’t be able to erase well and you may not like it.

In this tutorial I will teach you how to draw lips in 10 easy steps using a simple triangle shape. You can create different kinds of lips by making small changes in the first step. I came up with this method one day by somehow associating a pair of lips with a bow and arrow haha.

Shade both the top and bottom lip leaving the areas mentioned in STEP 4 the lightest. As you can see there is a dark shadow under the bottom lip. It starts to fade on the right side to show that the light source is coming from the upper right.

Draw a “U” touching the extreme edge of the oval making a bowl.

Try drawing a cartoonish mouth like you would draw bubble letters.

Finish the draft by adding the highlights and shadows on the background which forms the part of the face below the nose down to the chin.

If you practice one way for so long, it will get easier, and after that, you can even try other styles.

Draw a long isosceles triangle. Partway down draw a curve (similar to a “u” shape). Draw a straight horizontal line between the “u” shape and the base of the triangle. The longer you draw the horizontal line, the wider the lips will be. The shorter the line, the more plump they will be.

If I added more lines (to create volume), would it look more realistic?

“But what if I want to draw this on a face, Darlene?” Check out my tutorial on drawing faces to find out where you should place your triangle. It covers proportions and will help you determine how long the triangle should be as well as how wide the lips should extend taking other elements of the face into consideration.

Create the bottom lip by drawing a curved line which goes no further than the triangle’s base. Complete the opening of the mouth by using the horizontal line as a guide.

Draw two circles making each center on the top angles of the hexagon.

Draw the lips shorter and draw teeth. Draw the mouth taller than before.

Create the outlines for the top lip by making a shape that looks similar to a cupid’s bow.

Is there an easier and more “cartoonish” way of drawing mouths?

Create dark lines to make out a mouth with a sticking tongue.

After erasing the triangle, determine where the light source is coming from. For this example, the light source is coming from the top right. I’ve outlined the areas I want to highlight as well as added a cast shadow on left side of the bottom lip.

Don’t worry if your drawing doesn’t turn out the way you expected on the first try. Keep going at it and you will understand and grasp each step. It will become much easier! Also, don’t forget to experiment with different triangle shapes and positioning of the guides in STEP 2. Shading is the key to make anything look more realistic. Also, don’t forget that the irises aren’t just one solid color, there are designs in them.

Using a blending stump (learn how to use one here), smooth out the shading on the bottom lip. Avoid areas mentioned in STEP 4. Those areas will make the lips appear more plump and round. You will notice that the lip wrinkles slowly start to blend in with the shading. But they shouldn’t disappear!

That’s easy to fix with pencil drawings. There are many different sized erasers on the market, some are even moldable to suit your needs! You can always look at your local arts store for some good erasers.

If you don’t want to do that, or don’t have time for shopping, just gently using a regular eraser will do fine. There are also some erasable pens, but I would not recommend them for drawing purposes because they are very messy when you try to erase them.

So just keep adjusting the teeth until you get a size you are happy with!

The dip your lip makes at the top in the middle is called the Cupid’s bow.

Draw an inner “U” to the previously drawn U to make the lower lips .

Start with an outline sketch on the upper lip. The line here looks a bit distorted compared to the previous sample.

Fill in the basic colors on the mouth. This will look a little flat without the shading and highlighting. But thanks to the arched lines, the volume is already showing.

Create some lip wrinkles using a 0.5mm HB pencil. You don’t want to press too hard or else it will be difficult to achieve the effect in the next step.

Draw the outline sketches for the teeth biting the lower lip. Make the lips look luscious and pleasing. Regardless of the colors and shadowing, the volume of the lower lips is already showing.

Draw 3 more circles making its center on the angles of the hexagon.

Yes, this will make the process easier; most professional artists use reference images often. However, it may still take practice to get it perfect, as using references is still a skill to learn; don’t be surprised if it isn’t perfect the first time.

Draw another circle just below on the middle of the two circles

Wouldn’t using a reference image and just copying it over make the process any easier?

It might, but it really depends on how many lines you already have. Having way too many won’t look realistic either.

Drawing mouths is an important skill to have if you draw frequently, especially if you often draw people. It’s also really good to know how to draw different kinds of mouths. This wikiHow article will explain how you can draw various types of mouths.

Go over the lighter areas with the pointed end of a kneaded eraser and clean up the highlights to create the glare effect.

Add the short arched lines that show the volume of the lips and erase the unnecessary lines.

You can change the size of the lips by moving the horizontal line up (to make the upper lip thin) or down (to make to make the upper lip thicker). Also, adding more glare will make the lips look even more plump.

Using a 6b pencil, darken the shadows in areas such as the outer edges of the lips, under the bottom lip, the wrinkles and the corners of the lips.
