You should try to hold your eyelid tightly with your finger, or try to draw on the eyeliner a little lighter.

  • Use a thin coat of powder eye shadow in a similar color to your eyeliner to seal your eyeliner look. This will also give your eyes a little more of “pop” effect.[25]
  • Eye shadow can also help you create a specific look, such as a smokey eye.

11 FREE things you can get from beauty boutiques and counters in Singapore!

  • You can buy eyeliners at retailers including drugstores such as CVS, stores like Target or Walmart, or department stores such as Macy’s or Saks Fifth Avenue. Sephora, a large French makeup retailer with stores across the world, is another excellent place to purchase eyeliner.
  • If you want to try out different colors or types of eyeliner, visit the makeup counter at your favorite retailer and ask about samples. They may provide you with samples to take home, or they may apply the eyeliner to your eyes so you can see how it looks.
  • Most vendors, including CVS, Target, Macy’s, and Sephora, also have websites where you can purchase your eyeliner.
  • Eyeliners vary greatly in price. They can cost as little as 99 cents and as much as 50 dollars or more.

Now comes the main part – the eyeliner. You can either use the brush that comes with it or buy one. Start with a line above your lashes. Make sure you use small lines and strokes. It’s always better to build it up. If you make it too thick, you might create a mess out of it, so keep the strokes small. Once you are satisfied with one eye, do the same with the other one. Try to keep it as symmetrical as possible.

The colors that complement blue eyes would be different shades of purple, brown, gray, and silver. Avoid wearing blue and black liners. Try NYX Studio Liquid Liner in Extreme Smokey Grey.

Apply a matte base eye shadow. This creates a great canvas for your eyeliner by removing any discolorations and evening out your skin tone.[10]

You may need a while to perfect this but make sure the line is the same thinness from inner to outer corners of your eyes. If you like the way this look as it is, you can even stop here!

An old proverb holds that eyes are the windows to a person’s soul. One of the ways to enhance your eyes is by applying eyeliner, a cosmetic that originated in Egypt in the 15th century and has since been used all over the world. Eyeliner comes in many forms, including pencils, and it defines and highlights your eyes. Applying it can seem tricky at first, but it just takes a bit of practice.

Connect the lines only on the outside corner of your eye. Use the tip of your eyeliner to join your upper and lower lines. Be careful not to apply too much eyeliner in the corner, which might smudge.

With eyeliners, one of the most common mistakes is to try and cover up a jagged line with another line over it. Believe us, folks, that’s how you end up with eyeliner that’s way too thick and which drowns out your eyes.

  • If you prefer an eyeliner that is ethically produced, made of organic materials, and is not tested on animals, for example, companies including, Aveda, NARS, Arbonne, The Body Shop, and Josie Maran Cosmetics offer these products.
  • If your eyes are sensitive because you wear contact lenses, or if you suffer from allergic reactions to certain formulas, certain companies (like Almay) make non-allergenic (also called hypoallergenic) makeup, including eyeliner.

Red is a complementary color for green, so choose shades that have red undertones, such as purple (lavender or violet) and bronze. Try MAC Technakohl Eyeliner Kajal in Image Concious.

Consider what type of pencil eyeliner to use. There are many different types of eyeliner that come in a pencil form, each of which has a different consistency and texture, application, and effect.

  • Gel- or cream-based pencils offer simple and excellent application. These pencils apply a rich and intense color. They’re a good choice if you want to apply a winged, or cat eye, look.[2][3] You can also purchase gel or cream eyeliners that come in a pot and can be applied with a tapered brush applicator.
  • Powder-based pencils, sometimes called kohl, offer less intense color.[1] They’re also a good option if you want to smudge the eyeliner for a “smoky eye” effect. You can make the color appear more dramatic by wetting the tip before you apply the eyeliner.
  • Liquid eyeliner pencils offer the most dramatic and intense application. Many liquid liners come in pen form (though it more closely resembles a felt marker), making application fairly simple. However, mistakes are very visible and difficult to correct because of the deep color, so you must have a steady hand during application. Tips range from very thin to thick depending on how intense you want the look or if you want to apply a cat-eye or winged look.[4]

A liquid eyeliner is best for precise application. These liners come in two types of packaging, a tiny vial-like bottle with an extremely fine and precise dipping brush, and a marker type pen with a felt tip. If you’re a beginner, then I suggest you go for the latter one. The Sketch Marker Liquid Art Liner by Too Faced is a good choice for the felt tip liner.

This type of eyeliner is usually the first one we all started out with. It’s best used to line the water line and also to create a smokey look. The 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil is the no-brainer choice for the pencil eyeliner.

  • A brush can also help blend out mistakes, depending on how serious they are.
  • You can also use a little foundation on a Q-tip to correct mistakes. This decreases your risk of removing too much of your work.[23]

I want to wear eyeliner to school without it being obvious. How can I make sure it won’t be that noticeable?

As with most things in makeup, your eyeliner skills will only get better the more you use them, so we highly recommend practising as much as possible.

Apply foundation before you put on your eyeliner. Your foundation forms a base for your makeup, so it should be applied first. Start by applying foundation to your nose, then work your way out until your entire face is covered.

Don’t get me wrong, pandas are damn cute, but I don’t want to look like one when I have to attend a wedding or something. Knowing how to apply the eyeliner is one of the basics of makeup, so if you love makeup, you eventually learn how to do it. I am no exception! My go to is the winged eyeliner. When I feel lazy and don’t feel like doing myself up too much, I like going all out on my eyeliner. We’ve broken this potentially scary tasks into steps so that it’s easy to understand.

Tightlining with a waterproof pencil eyeliner will eliminate the eyeliner gap even further, but this needs to be gotten used to – the same way people have to get used to wearing contact lenses!

Soften the lines on your upper and lower lids. This will make the look softer and give the liner a “lived in” look.[21]

Many pencil eyeliners also require sharpening – you certainly don’t want to try using a blunt one!

Instead, draw the thinnest line possible following your lashline and end it at the outer corner of your eyes. You can fill in a wing later.

When I put on pencil eyeliner, it often looks crusty or incomplete. How can I make my eyeliner more bold?

Gel eyeliners are typically a solid clay-like substance found in pots and applied with an eyeliner brush. They’re more troublesome to bring around, but they do deliver precision, pigment, and long-lasting wear.

Here in Asia, our eye shapes can be very different from those of Caucasian beauty junkies, so watching tutorials on YouTube may not be the best way to learn how to apply eyeliner.

Choose an eyeliner color. Pencil eyeliners come in a broad range of colors from electric blue and emerald green to traditional colors like black and brown.

Even if you have gung ho’ed your way past that natural reflex, skin folds on your eyelids may also mean that you miss out some spots when drawing your eyeliner, and this may still be obvious to others.

If you’re worried about costs, don’t. Drugstore brands nowadays carry good quality eyeliners in all three of these formulas, so you won’t have to burst your bank account when you’re learning how to apply eyeliner and finding what works best for you.

  • Pencil sharpener. You need to sharpen powder/kohl shadows for best application. This is also a way to clean your pencil, as you’re shaving off the surfaces that may have been exposed to bacteria.
  • Eye makeup remover. Many companies, including Neutrogena and Clarins, offer eye makeup remover that effectively and gently removes eye makeup and fixes mistakes in your application.
  • Brushes. A small-tipped brush in natural or synthetic fibers is the best way to soften your eyeliner line. They are also an easy way to apply gel or liquid liner.
  • Q-tips or cotton swabs. These are another great way to soften the look of eyeliner. Cotton swabs also effectively fix mistakes when paired with eye makeup remover.

If you want to do something like a wing, however, start from the center of your lashes and start thickening the line outwards. DV recommends that you do this in small, incremental steps so you don’t end up with too-thick eyeliner by accident.

You just have to do it! Eyeliner is hard to master whether it’s pencil, liquid or gel. No one is perfect the first time they do it, so just practice until you’ve gotten the hang of it and are no longer afraid.

Hooded lids, however, have a small but significant difference: they happen when your eyelids seem to partially or entirely cover your entire lashline, where your eyelashes begin to grow.

Before we talk about how to apply the eyeliner, we must go through the basics of the types of eyeliners out there that you can use.

Go for rich, autumnal colors like golds, browns, and greens as these colors would enhance the color of your eyes. Any of these colors would look great on its own or with a trace of black eyeliner and mascara. Try Revlon Color One-Stroke Defining Eyeliner in the shade Glazed Green.

Eyeliners can be broadly categorised into three categories: pencil, gel, and liquid. We won’t say one is better than the other; it’s really about what you prefer, and what look you’re trying to create.

Before applying eyeliner, lightly hold the corner of your eye to stabilize it. Next, place the pencil close to your lash line, then slowly drag it from the outer corner to the inner corner of your eye, drawing a thin line. Repeat this on the bottom lash line and connect the lines only at the outer corner. Use a Q-tip to soften the lines and blend out any mistakes, then repeat the process on the other eye.

  • Be careful to not apply eyeliner or makeup remover in your actual eye.
  • Be aware of signs of irritation, like red eyes and rashes. If you notice any of these symptoms, stop using the eyeliner and notify your healthcare provider.

This creates the number one no-no in drawing eyeliner: the eyeliner gap.

Try to use the liner below your lashes for your lower lash and a little higher for your upper lashes.

And now, we shall proceed with the tutorial with no further ado!

Brown is the most common eye color and is very easy to work with when it comes to makeup. Use shades of blue/purples and metallic tones of golds, browns, and bronze as these will make the eyes stand out more. Try Maybelline Vivid And Smooth Eye Liner Pencil in shade 6.

A wing can also really help for those of us with downturned eyes, or eyes that need further perking up at the outer edges. The shape of the wing lifts up the eye and affords the illusion of a more upturned eye that looks more energised.

To help you achieve clean lines, you can also consider using straight-edged items to help you draw the line, like sticking a piece of tape (make sure it’s not super sticky first), using an old namecard, a ruler, or even the handle of a spoon.

  • Unusual colors such as electric blue, orange, or emerald green will really stand out against your eyes and eyelids, so it’s a good idea to use them for special, non-professional occasions. If you want to tone down these colors for an everyday look, pair them with a darker, neutral-colored liner.
  • Different eyeliner colors highlight each eye color differently. For example, plum eyeliner makes green eyes “pop,” while grey eyeliner looks great on blue eyes. Purple-toned liners can enhance brown eyes, and black is a good choice for any eye color.
  • A good rule of thumb is to apply shades such as black, dark brown, deep plum, or grey if you want a more natural look.[5] You can intensify or soften these colors as you like to achieve your desired look.

I can never stop at just the eyeliner on the eyelid. I think I have an involuntary reaction to wing it out or something. I feel like it completes me somehow. Okay, so moving on to how you achieve this look. The trick to finding the right angle is to follow the natural line of the lower lash line. If a line extended from your lower lash line, that is where your liner should wing out to. Map out the line and fill it in slowly. Take your time with this when you’re first starting out, because if you mess it up, you’ll have to start over.

Most people don’t freehand their wings though – it’s difficult to get that straight a line without some kind of guide, so don’t be too afraid if you’re a newbie.

Here are a few simple steps that will help you to properly wear the eyeliner using an eye liner pencil:

If you have a fully hooded lid, however, you may have to consider a wacky technique called the floating eyeliner look.

Apply mascara. Applying a coat of mascara to your eyes will highlight your eyeliner and enhance your eyes even further.

While eyeliners aren’t as daunting to try out as eyeshadows and mascaras can be, it is certainly difficult to do them nicely. Everyone could probably draw a line above their eyelashes, but can everyone really say that they knew how to apply eyeliner?

Here are some tips and tricks to help you achieve that perfect wing.

Buy your eyeliner. Once you’ve decided on the color, format, and formula, you are ready to purchase the pencil or pencils either at a store or online.

Absolutely! But make sure that the eyeliner you use is the right choice for you. There are many different brands and types, so keep practicing and trying different ones to find the one that works best for you.

Make sure you have good lighting. Pick a room with lots of bright, direct light either from the sun or a lamp.

Use the angle of your lower lashline to guide the angle of your wing. You can place a dot where you want the tip of the wing to be, and fill in from there.

Experiment with the length and curve of your wing – you may surprise yourself with how much better a smaller and less ostentatious wing might make you look!

Apply pencil liner to your lower lid. Place the pencil as close to your lash line as possible while avoiding the rims of your eyes. Slowly and gently draw a thin line from the outer corner to the inner corner.[18]

It depends on the look. If you’d like a thinner line, you’ll need a sharper pencil, and blunt pencils might give more pigment and a wider line. A more blunt pencil, but still thin, is the easiest to apply.

Yes, you can. You can use eyeliner pencils as lip colors/lip pencils. For eg., Chromographic Pencils from MAC is a two-in-one pencil.

Take a little amount of loose power in an eyeliner brush and apply it below the smudged line. This will prevent your eye liner from smudging further. You can do the same thing for the upper lash line also. Finish off with some good coats of mascara.

They come in waterproof and non-waterproof formulas, but it is not recommended to use them for tightlining – it’ll be a rather painful experience.

  • Your eyes will look larger if you only line the outer 2/3rds of your eyelid instead of going all the way to the inner corner.
  • The eyeliner on your lower lid should be much softer than on your upper lid or else you can look harsh. A good rule of thumb is that it should be one third the size of the line on your upper lid.[19]

Also, everyone’s eye shapes are different. In fact, one person can have a slightly different eye shape from one eye to the other. To achieve the most symmetrical eyeliner look, it’s important that you take the time to observe your own features and practise.

Eye liners are a classy way to define and give shape to your eyes. When it comes to lining your eyes, there are a host of products that can help you do so. There are different kinds of eye liners available in the market today. You can choose from a regular pencil eye liner to a pen eye liner to a gel eye liner, and in some cases, some kohl pencils also do a great job of working as an eye liner.

Finish your look with a setting spray, if you have one. A makeup setting spray will keep your makeup in place. Although it’s optional, a setting spray will help your makeup last longer.

I fill mine in just like coloring a picture, as it ensures solid coloring throughout. Although with the issue you describe, it sounds like your eyeliner might be old or poor quality. I would recommend doing some searching online to find a reputable brand.

Liquid eyeliners are the most mainstream of the lot right now, and are an ink-like formula delivered in pens. The tips of these pens are usually felt tip or brush tip, and different brands may also vary in softness.

If you do make a mistake, resist your natural urge to draw another line over it to correct the jaggedness. Instead, have cotton buds and makeup remover or micellar water at hand to carefully erase the mistake and then go over the now-empty area.

It’s often hard to tell hooded lids and monolids apart, and they often happen together as well.

Wash your face. Eyelids are the greasiest part of your face. If your skin and eyelids are clean, your eyeliner and any other eye makeup you apply will last longer.[6]

Drawing eyeliner for hooded lids is quite tricky, as it really depends on how hooded your eyelids are. If they are only partially hooded, you should probably only stick with thin eyeliners, as a thick one would obscure your lower lid entirely.

Wearing an eye liner helps you define your eyes in the most prominent eyes. An eye liner, when applied in thick lines with a nude lip, makes for a very intense and artsy look. It can be worn on its own, or with an eye shadow to enhance the colour and the shape of the eyes. Also, eye liners play a big role when it comes to creating the ever popular smokey eye look.

Consider the eyeliner formula. Most companies offer different eyeliner formulas for different needs including sensitive eyes and organic, animal-friendly products. Some even offer formulas that include serums to elongate your lashes.

Although pop culture has us believing that winged eyeliners must always be a va-va-voom, dramatic, cat-eye look, it doesn’t always have to be the case.

You need to make sure that your pencil is sharpened, and make sure that it is not too soft. Make sure that your hand is steady, and don’t press down too hard with the eyeliner.

I recommend Annabelle or Revlon pencil eyeliners as they are moist enough to smear easily along my lash lines and are nicely pigmented. For a liquid eyeliner, I absolutely love Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Serum and Eyeliner.

For drugstore gel liners, my favorite is the Loreal Infallible Lacquer 24 hour liner.

  • Another option for a softer look is to apply brown eyeshadow over the liner on your lower lid using a small, tapered brush. This works particularly well to soften black liner.
  • Use a brush, Q-tip, or even your finger to soften the line.

Compare your eyes to make sure they look the same. It can be tricky to apply your eyeliner the same way on both sides. Check your work to make sure your eyes don’t look different. If they do, try to make them even.

How can I make sure that the lines stop coming out too thick?

After you have successfully winged out your liner (congratulations are in order!), you can proceed to line your lower lash line (only in the outer half) with a pencil liner and smudge it out. Apply some mascara, and you are done!

Liquid liners deliver the cleanest and most dramatic lines but they can also be hard to control – a slight mistake is easily noticeable because of how pigmented they usually are. This is also why makeup beginners tend to shy away from them.

Lightly hold the outer corner of your eye. This will also help you apply eyeliner evenly.

Let’s look at the products you will need to apply eyeliner like a pro!

Have your tools ready. There are a few products to have handy that will soften your look or fix mistakes.

Pencil eyeliners are generally preferred if you’re going for a more natural, blended-out look with vague edges. They also come in waterproof formulas that will be useful if you have watery eyes, or if you’re trying to tightline on your upper or lower eyelid.

You probably came in here all intimidated. I can completely relate to that. It took me a while to get it right; do know that it requires some practice. You can’t sprout wings in a day (pun intended)! Do let us know how it turns out by commenting in the box below.

How To Apply Eyeliner Perfectly – TutorialStep 1: Prep Your Eyes

Start with thin lines and make it thicker in small increments. Don’t leave any skin-coloured gaps between the eyeliner and your eyes.

  • Foundation will help keep your eyeliner from running or fading.
  • If you’re not wearing foundation or just want extra staying power, use an eyelid primer, which will help keep your eyeliner in place. Simply blend the primer across your eyelid, then let it dry for 10 seconds before continuing to your next makeup application step.[7]

Apply eyeliner to your upper lid. Place the pencil as close to your lash line as possible and slowly draw a thin line from the outer corner to the inner corner.[12]

To help your eye makeup achieve the best that it could, we’ve put together this tutorial that will teach you exactly how to draw eyeliner, and how you can make it work the best for you.

Eyeliner pencils are popular among makeup beginners because they’re more forgiving since they’re easier to remove. Most people also find them easier to control.

Winged eyeliners are generally what comes to mind when people think about drawing eyeliners, and for good reason. The bold and dramatic look can really make a gorgeous difference to a person’s look, and also make them look more awake.

  • If you’re interested in doing winged or cat eye style liner, you’ll also want to thicken the eyeliner line. Then, draw a line at a 45 degree angle from the corner of your eye. Start from the bottom of the outer edge of your eye and extend upward. You can make this line as long or as short as you wish.[16]
  • Some makeup artists suggest making dots or dashes along your lash line and then connecting them if you aren’t steady with drawing a continuous line.[17]
  • You can thicken this pencil line as you like, for instance, if you want to apply your eyeliner in the cat eye or winged style.[15]
  • Keep the line thin to start. A thinner line will create a more natural look.[13]
  • Start at the outside corner of your eye. You want to deposit the least amount of pigment on the inner corners of your eye.[14]

Make sure you are in a comfortable and stable position. Rest your elbow on a flat surface to steady your hand to ensure even application.[8]

While the options are many, the key to remember is that you need to be really steady handed while applying the eye liner. And in case you are applying an eye liner for the first time, it is better to start off with thin lines rather than creating really thick and prominent lines.

Is it better for the pencil to be a little blunt or to be sharper?

Don’t do a winged look. Get a thin, felt-tipped liner and apply in the areas needed; make sure it isn’t thick.

Seal your look with eye shadow. Properly sealing your eyeliner will ensure that it lasts for a long time and doesn’t run.[24]

This is a step that is quite overlooked, but is, in fact, the most important step. After cleansing your face, apply a moisturizer for the face and an eye cream around the eyes. The eye cream helps with premature wrinkles and evens out any redness or discoloration near the area.

Yes, you can. You can buy pencils that can be worn both as an eyeliner and a lip color/lip pencil. For eg., Chromographic Pencil from MAC is a two-in-one pencil.

Although this may seem intimidating at first, this is probably going to become your best friend if you love those cat eyes. I, for one, swear by it. They usually come in pots, so you’ll need to use a brush for it. I highly recommend the Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner by Maybelline.

We hope you understood this step by step tutorial of applying an eye liner using the eye liner pencil. While this is a very easy way to define your eyes, some first-time users may face issues with creating the lines.

If that is the case, do not worry, as with practice, you will soon be able to create perfect lines for your eyes, just the way you want. So try this out and tell us how it went!

Some people try pulling up their eyelids instead to expose these gaps and fill them in, but many sources now discourage this as it may cause more wrinkles in the long run.

To avoid this, you may need to practise angling your mirror such that you can draw your eyeliner with your eyes looking downwards.

Repeat the same application process on the other eye. Make the same size lines on the other eye so that your eyes will match. Refer back to your first eye as you apply the eyeliner so the finished look will be symmetrical.

How many of you wanted to create perfectly lined eyes but ended up looking like a panda instead?

When I put pencil eyeliner on I always get it in my eyelashes. What can I do?

To achieve an even and clean base, apply a small amount of eye primer on the eyelid, under your eyes, and around the general eye region where any kind of eye makeup would go. The primer’s main job is to make the skin smoother so that it becomes easier to apply makeup. This will give you a flawless finish and also keep the makeup in place for a long time. Apply a concealer on top of the eyelid and the under eyes. Blend it well, and make sure to set it with a setting powder.

Monolids are also generally known as single eyelids. With monolids, you want to make the outer corner of your eye more defined than the inner corner, so it opens up your eyes rather than closes it.

This is another mistake that many beginners make when they’re first learning how to apply eyeliner. Because our eyes are, after all, a sensitive area, there is a tendency for us to naturally avoid drawing too close to our eyeballs.

  • As pencils age, liner can get stuck. Heat up the pencil with a blow dryer, which will make it easier for the ink to come out.
  • Once you have the basics down, practice more detailed applications like cat eyes and winged tips.
  • Make sure you have a clean area in which to apply your eyeliner. Makeup can carry germs, especially the longer you have it. Using makeup in an unclean space only increases the chance of an infection.
  • Don’t keep old pencils. A good rule of thumb is to keep pencils for no longer than one year. Otherwise, germs that have accumulated on the pencil might cause an infection.
  • It’s a good idea to use a matte, skin-toned cream eyeshadow as your base. This will allow for more even application of your eyeliner.
  • However, cream eyeshadows can also lead to smudging or creases throughout the day. It is important to set any cream-based eyeshadows with a powder-based shadow or translucent powder before you apply eyeliner.

Blend primer or concealer across your lid, if you haven’t already. Primer and concealer both keep your eye makeup from running or fading. Use your finger or a clean brush to lightly blend the primer or concealer across your eyelid.

Let it dry for at least 10 seconds before you continue.[9]

Highlight your eye. If you want to make your eyes “pop” more, applying a little white eyeliner or shadow at the corners of your lids is an excellent trick.[22]

Correct any mistakes. If you made any mistakes in your application, go back and correct them with a little eye makeup remover and a cotton swab.
