How to Draw Manga Volume 1 : Compiling Characters by Society for the Study of Manga Techniques (2001)
My sister got this book for herself when she was in middle-school and started tracing Loveless valentines and wanted to get into manga. i stole the book from her and read it cover to cover like i thought it was too good for her.
what the other reviews say about it being advanced or trying to cover too much in one book isn’t true. it’s a great breadth of information for any artist who wants to get into illustration of one type or another and has a section for everyone.
Don’t let the cover fool you: there’s a whole section covering briefly body types and character design and unlike Chris Hart’s books, THIS how to draw manga book respect’s an artists’ choice to draw muscly women and wispy men.
the book also talks about character design vs. style choice. It’s been years since I read it but i’m sure it offered lots of tips and tricks on how to make your inks not blend in together and become a mess: techniques I still utilize ten years later.
something like the last 20% of the book becomes very adamant over the importance of setting and scene and has a short tutorial on drawing tree bark and spares no experience on the value of backgrounds going into fine, sharp detail.
it also swears by the 2 and 3 point perspective systems.basically, anyone wanting to go into professional illustration, character design, background design or western style comics could benefit from this book if you use it like a real guide and, like another how-to literature, take everything it says with a grain of salt.

How To Draw Manga Volume 31: More About Pretty Gals (v. 31) by Hikaru Hayashi (August 25, 2003)
Solid information is plentiful and more compacted in this book than in other books of this series I’ve seen, which I was extremely pleased about. I enjoyed learning about the types of pens and other tools manga artists use, as well as the cycle of writing, drafting and producing manga.
The book also covers the basics of drawing characters, backgrounds in perspective.I’d give the book five stars, but it has the problem of trying to balance technical information with kids stuff, such as how you’ll get more respect from original artwork than badly copying other people’s.
