I love this book. Gene Franks is my favorite pencil drawing artist at all time. However the drawings printed in this version is too contrasty. There are more like mixing of pen and pencil drawings. The first version of the book that printed on 80s is way better.

And excellent well written book by and excellent colored pencil artist. Great examples and explanations included, an excellent tutor for the mixed media student.
EXCELLENT book! I’ve been a mixed media artist and teacher for 15 years and am learning things about composition that I knew but couldn’t articulate (“It just LOOKS right”). Projects are sophisticated enough for the advanced artist, simple enough for the beginner.
I’ve already recommended this book to my artist pals and will look at others by this author.
101 Mixed Media Techniques: Master the fundamental concepts of mixed media art
Gene Franks, who began drawing and painting at the age of 10, is a renowned master of expressive pencil drawing. Franks spent his early years in rural Arkansas, where he had the opportunity to observe the beauty of nature. He dedicated many hours of intense study to perfect his drawing techniques and, during the process, created many fine works in pencil.

Drawing is fun! Or at least it should be! I understand that it can be hard to overcome fear of rejection – art is an expression of us and nobody wants to hear that their drawings are “bad.” And I know that getting that “creative spark” back can be challenging—it can be hard to find inspiration.

Interesting book with new ideas for colored pencil art. The drawing skills needed for this may be too advanced for beginners but the concept of using colored pencil with collage can be used by anyone who practices drawing to increase skills.
The ideas for mixing media are interesting and make me want to try them by adding colored pencil to other media that I normally use.

Pencil Drawing (Artist’s Library series #03) Paperback – January 1, 1988
Pencil Drawing includes comprehensive instructions for drawing a variety of subjects in pencil. A renowned master in the field, Gene Franks explains how to develop your drawings from start to finish, teaching specific techniques for shading, contrast, texture, detail, and more.
You will learn all aspects of pencil drawing as you follow the easy-to-follow instructions for drawing everything from animals and people to household items in no time at all. All you need is this book, a pencil, and a little perseverance!
The very short book has a few nice drawings of varied subjects, broken down into a few stages each. There’s little in the way of real instruction, though–certainly little that a true newbie would find of use.
The art materials include a very small sketch pad (just 9.5 x 6.5 inches) and a passable beginner’s assortment of pencils and so forth, as described by Amazon. There’s one huge problem with the pencils, though: the darkest is a 2B.
For many pencil artists, that’s the _lightest_ thing they’ll often work with. If you want to achieve truly dark areas in a drawing for realistic contrast and shading, you need something more like 6 or 7B and darker (or charcoal pencils or sticks).
You’d be better off buying basic materials at an art supply store and checking out beginner tutorials online, more detailed instructional books, and/or taking a class at your local art center, school, etc.
For a newbie, I’d recommend getting a full set of quality art pencils (like 8B-2H hardness) in a case, a kneaded eraser (vital!), vinyl eraser, a couple stumps/tortillons, a small sanding block (or just use a piece of fine-grit sandpaper for carpentry, etc.
), a sharpener (any standard one will do), a ruler, a circle template, and a _big_ sketch pad.
All of this is presented in a fun and easy to understand way. I want to make drawing pencil sketches fun again!

Lights and Shadows: Shading techniques in practice (Drawing book for beginners)
Gene Franks sketchbooks will always be given a high rating by me. If you get a basic concept of using a pencil and smearing to shade with your finger or whatever and have any talent whatsoever even a minimal amount— if you focus his books will bring you to a professional level.
I truly believe this was what took me from affair artist to an excellent one– though it was not this book it was one of his books; but they all seem excellent and I have been offered thousands for a single sketch– so I highly recommend his work to others
This book is awesome!!!!! It’s great for a beginner or someone with experience! I love nature and the ideas is this book are just what I was looking for!

I am going to teach you how to create great pencil art sketches, pen and ink sketches, and charcoal drawings, all for FREE starting from the basics here on how to draw.
You have probably been drawing pencil sketches since you could hold a pencil. When we were children, most of us doodled, scribbled and sketched unabashedly. Creative expression came so freely and so joyously. I remember so well — it was a real hoot to be in a class of emerging artists creating great artwork. We were just kids really, having a lot of fun!

This book shows stages of several drawings from first block-in to completed drawing. However, vital information is missing in every case. The author moves from step to step without showing you how he got there, The in-between methods and strokes are glaringly absent.
It’s clear that he is a fine artist but is seems that he would rather you didn’t discover what he actually does between roughing in your picture and the finished product. I was very disappointed. It’s a good thing I didn’t pay much for this.
