Once again, I truly believe that everyone can draw, it’s just that most people haven’t been given good and right instruction. Let me assure you that it gets easier from the moment you get the ball rolling,

You see, for a beginner like me who didn’t know how to draw at all, I can’t just learn to draw from a nicely drawn picture. It’s just too hard for me. Nobody learns anything by being shown only the final result, anyway. I had spent a lot hoping to learn drawing portraits by attending drawing courses and buying art books.

Extend the 2 lines where the inner corners of each eye are located. These guidelines will determine the nose’s width. Now that we have a box, it’s time to draw the nose. Click here to see my nose tutorial! Start with a circle, resting it anywhere between line 1 and 2. You can give your male character a more chiseled appearance by drawing the nose using very angular shapes.

Try to get a wide array of tones on your drawing ranging from very light to very dark. A true black is difficult to obtain with graphite because when the paper is saturated with graphite, it will glare. You can use charcoal in your pencil drawings to obtain a real black.

Comparative measurement involves seeing the ratios between the objects and using the negative space as a measuring device. For instance, an apple might be two times smaller than a vase placed next to it; a child could be three times shorter than an adult. In other words, you relate one object to the next by placing invisible comparative lines to demonstrate the relationships.

Different people started drawing from different stage as long as you get the good and proper instructions for a good start. Besides, drawing pencil portraits is a fun way to hone your observation skills.

A kneaded eraser very effectively removes graphite from the page, allowing you to define highlights in your work.

Even if you just washed your hands, there is always a tiny residue of oil on your skin that might go onto the paper and make the graphite more difficult to remove. For that reason, you might want to avoid blending with your finger. Experiment with different materials — tissue paper or cotton swabs works well for that purpose as well as stumps. Don’t throw away your stumps when they are dirty, as they can be used to apply a light layer of graphite.

For this approach, you’re only creating texture in a particular area. The type of paper you select (rough, with a bit of a tooth) is important.

Take a look at the different faces I made below using rough measurements!

Draw the upper hairline somewhere in between line A and B. It’s up to you how large you want the forehead to be. To draw a receding hairline, go above line A. When you’re drawing a man’s face, bring in hair from the sides of the head to create a solid and visible looking hairline.

Soft pencils are great for shading the darks and the middle tones. The most common medium soft graphite pencils are 2B pencils, which are usually used for general outlines and sketching.

Extend the nose’s bridge past the eyelids to define the brow bone (this step is optional). These lines should be very light! Using a 4B pencil, draw the eyebrows along the brow bone. Facial features that can accentuate masculinity are thick bushy eyebrows!

Good question. If you attend drawing courses in college it will cost you $1000 or more.

To block in the subject, make a simplified division between the light and the dark parts of a composition. Observe the light, how it travels across the form and where it turns to shadow. Sketch in the shadows first, as you can see in the sketch above on the left.

Note: Remember to use a blunt HB pencil for these steps. I used a 4B so you can clearly see what I’m doing. Remember, the darker you go and the harder you press, the more difficult it will be to erase your under-layers/guidelines.

“Thank you very much for your e-mail, it’s great to see that you’re taking an interest in the people who buy your e-book, and how it can be improved. I haven’t really had much time to practice, so far I have only done the first example, and I used my Graphics Tablet instead of actual pencil and paper. I find your guides very helpful and informative.”

If you have an electric eraser, use it to quickly get rid of all the guidelines that run through your drawing. You can clean up certain dark spots or tight spaces with a kneaded eraser.

There are 2 ways to do this step: Ruler or no ruler. I highly recommend using the ruler method for the first couple of faces you draw. Why? Because doing this step without it can throw your proportions off like crazy. Especially if you have trouble locating the ‘center’ of an object with your eyes. The no ruler method requires you to split multiple sections of the face in half and then in half again.

I struggled to learn on how to draw pencil portraits so I decided to get a part-time job and spent my hard-earned money on drawing courses and art books.

If you have completed this, I’m confident to say that you’ll be able to draw portraits of your friends, family members, or celebrities.

You will get to see extremely detailed steps on drawing pencil portrait. Imagine you can draw anyone that you like, your idols, your friends, your family members, your loved ones and yourself.

From these disappointments, I had to learn drawing pencil portraits on my own, and I wasted much time and effort through lots of trial and error but that doesn’t mean you have to!

You can’t draw every single strand that would be on a person’s head. But you do need to add enough distinct strands to give your drawing a clear texture and form of hair. Drawing hair correctly can change the look of your drawing dramatically.

Though pricier, the Faber-Castell 9000 Graphite Pencils also come in sets of different grades of hardness and have superior black, break-resistant leads.

As you can see, there is really 100% NO RISK to you. ” – (Christopher Sia)

The blending of graphite works best with a paper stump or a small piece of sketch paper. Don’t rub the surface, however, because it ends up looking smudged. Strive for a nice and even application of pigment, which requires just a bit of blending. Blending tends to make all tones (values) look as the middle tone. Thus, it’s important to re-establish the darkest areas and to work on the highlights afterward.

Drawing with pencil is an accessible method of creating artwork at any skill level. It requires minimal materials, and even beginners have a strong grasp of how to use this medium.

By following the steps, the period of time that I spend to complete a pencil portrait were 7 days. After that, everything seemed to get easier. From 7 days to 6 days, from 6 days to 4 days, and from 4 days to 1 day.

No Ruler Method: Without the ruler, I draw lines in this order: CENTER LINE, 2, 3, B, A, C (B is included because it’s easier to break the forehead section in half first, especially when you’re drawing freehand). This is the method I use to draw heads all the time.

The Center Line and Line 2 mark the general boundaries for each ear.

Hatching is simply drawing parallel lines to fill a space with value. This is one of the most common forms of shading and mark making.

A gum eraser removes less pigment than a kneaded eraser, so you can produce depth.

Indeed, the eyes are often the first part of a portrait that people notice. For this reason, most of the artists pay special emphasis to eyes.

Yes, this means that you’ll only have to make one-time payment of $27 to learn pencil portrait drawing. There are absolutely NO hidden charges whatsoever.

Ruler Method: Make a ruler beside your drawing that is the same height. The ruler should be marked so there are 8 equal spaces. Always start with the center line. Draw faint lines through the face on the markings labelled CENTER LINE, 2, 3, A, and C. As you get used to this, you won’t need to draw the ruler on the side.

Graphite pencils come in various degrees of hardness, from 9H (the hardest) to 9B (the softest).  H stands for hardness and B for blackness, so a 9H pencil will be very hard and light, and a 9B pencil will be very soft and black.

For a pencil that can create both broad strokes and precise lines, go with Cretacolor’s Monolith woodless pencil (included in this Cretacolor Silver Box Graphite Drawing Set). These pencils have a protective lacquer coating, are easy to sharpen and range in hardness from HB (medium) to 9B (extra soft).

It’s important for beginners to learn about “line of action” and understand human’s structure before starting to draw figure drawing.

If you’re just getting started with pencil drawing, you probably don’t want to be drawing on expensive paper from the get-go. It’s a good idea to invest in two types of paper: sketch paper, which is cheap and ideal for testing out ideas and refining pencil techniques; and higher-quality archival drawing paper, which is thicker and has a gentle “tooth” ideal for graphite, for when you’re ready to work on a final piece.

Most people interested in pencil portrait drawing just keep looking for free quick tips around and you should know that free tips don’t come with complete instruction. But I don’t think you would have read this far if you are one of them who follow the crowd.

Crosshatching is simply two directions of hatching layered atop one another. The more strokes you layer, the finer and darker the area is going to be.

Drawing the mouth correctly often makes or breaks a portrait, the portrait comes alive with a well-drawn and well-shaded mouth. When you draw and shade on the mouth correctly, it suddenly has an energy all its own.

Most of these books only provide nice-looking results of their work and are full of boring description expecting you to learn! It’s like telling you how to cook a pizza without showing you. Yes, theory is important but for the beginner it is more often confusing and discouraging.

In the sight method, you’ll set up your drawing pad right next to the subject itself, so you can transfer the object to the paper at an accurate size by measuring your object with a pencil.

Many people have voiced these and other objections, sometimes quite rudely. In reality, however, age, inexperienced, or a perceived lack of talent is no barrier to being able to draw the type of pencil portraits you have always wanted to.

Once I receive more testimonials, I’ll increase the price in the near future.

Produce unique textures by placing the paper over an object and rubbing your pencil back and forth.

It’s because you either weren’t taught a step-by-step method and tried to copy blindly from examples, or you looked at the drawings of someone with a lot of talent and experience and thought that you couldn’t do it.

Through this fun exercise, you will be able to draw faces faster with little effort, identify proportional errors when you revisit old drawings, identify what makes certain faces look more realistic than others, be able to draw cartoons, caricatures and more.

Draw a large circle and make a horizontal line below it for the chin. Then sketch the jawline. Draw a vertical line down the center of the face and make sure both sides of the face are symmetrical.

Some artists produce energetic, rough lines, while others make deliberate, careful contours. The quality of the line determines how interesting your subject looks.

As always, you don’t need to stick to the exact guidelines above. Learn how to draw heads using the basic guidelines and then mix and match facial features and face proportions.

To make the soft shading shown in #3, you would move your pencil in a circular motion. By moving it back and forth with a light touch, you create a slightly different texture.

Each of these reference pictures presents a different challenge that will improve your skills in one or more of the eight steps. There are reference pictures for beginners with little shading and increase in difficulty to the more advanced pictures. Keep practicing will sharpen up your drawing skill. Practice makes perfect!

The eye is the most expressive feature of the face and is key to capturing the likeness of your drawing. Many people start looking your drawing from the eyes then only to other parts.

Harder pencils are sharp and can be used for details. They’re easier to erase but more difficult to blend. You can use them for very light shading, but it would be difficult to shade a large area with a hard pencil.

Every drawing begins with a sketch. There are three main methods for getting the sketch just right which all involve extrapolating the information in front of you and using only what’s necessary, to relate objects to one another, understand the linear perspective and develop accurate forms.

Right now, the period of time for me to complete a pencil portrait is less than 5 hours..

Some of the art books may provide step-by-step method but they’re not exactly a ‘truly’ step-by-step guide, there’s quite a huge jump from step A to B!

There are total of 60pages in this e-book. Personally, I hate 200-page books that can be summed up in 70 pages or less. I get right to the point. I make it more on practical, step-by-step methods that can be learnt easily the minute u read it.

Invest in an eraser. Even if your pencil has an eraser on the end, it will be worn down in no time. A soft gum eraser or a “big pink” eraser (like a pencil eraser but larger) are both good choices, and typically retail for $1 or less.

The mouth is the second most expressive feature of the face. In some cases it communicates emotion more strongly than do the eyes.

Get yourself a good pencil sharpener. A great choice for beginners is a manual pencil sharpener with two openings. Each cavity is suitable for sharpening the pencil to a different type of tip; this means that every pencil can be sharpened to multiple points, making one more versatile.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Christopher Sia and I have been drawing pencil portraits since I was in secondary school. I was a teen who didn’t know how to draw at all. I thought that drawing realistic portrait will be easy but it isn’t if is without any good coaching.

Graphite drawings can easily get messy, so it’s always a good idea to use something, like a sheet of paper under your hand, to avoid smudging your drawing. You can also try to work from left to right if you are right-handed or right to left if you are left-handed to minimize the risk of having your hand going over an already drawn area.

All of them started hard and struggled in the beginning. So, I created this tutorial to make you easier to learn from the beginning that most of the artists suffered.       3 Exclusive Bonuses For Immediate Action

This is the final step of this drawing portraits tutorial. This final step provides the finishing touches to shading the forehead, cheek, and jaw.

In the first step, you will learn on how to choose a reference picture that’s right for you to draw. Some pictures are harder to draw than others, and many beginners jump into the wrong picture, only to give up and never try again.

While pencils don’t make the artist, being armed with the best equipment sets you up for drawing success.

What I found when I read art books is that most of them skip the part on teaching ears drawing by covering the ears with long hair. And even if they did mention the ears, it’s very quick and doesn’t go into details.

This technique is a very time-consuming type of shading, but it’s sometimes necessary to describe a specific texture. Some artists have the patience to do a complete drawing using the dots only. The more dots you place, the darker the value is — the fewer dots create a lighter value. By varying the strength, size, and number of dots, you can make a range of values in a picture.

Most of the art books and courses don’t provide a step by step guide. I made this tutorial and offering it for only $27 because I want to help you achieve drawing success in an easier way without struggling in the beginning like all the artists did.

The grid method is often used to enlarge the drawing for a mural painting or a large artwork. This old method involves dividing the drawing into equal squares. Then, you compare and transfer abstracted shapes from the squares to the enlarged surface. This technique helps to see the comparative relationships between the objects.

The nose is one of the EASIEST features to draw because it doesn’t do much in terms of  giving emotional response for your drawing. Finding noses hard to draw? That’s often because people only focus on drawing the other facial features.

I charge $30 an hour a day for private lessons so the cost of private lessons for 7 days would be $210.

This is a separate topic of drawing human body correctly. In this bonus you will learn on basic knowledge of the human body, and how the body moves, is crucial to drawing realistic whole-body portraits. This bonus material illustrates the concept of the “line of action” and provides basic information on human anatomy.

To make it easy to digest, I split the tutorial up into 3 parts: How to draw a face from the front, side and 3/4 view. This is part 1 of 3. I came up with the original methods in these 3 tutorials by measuring over a dozen adult faces, so each tutorial carries over the same measuring techniques. Drawing faces should be easy as pie after you get the proportions down.

The position of the features is the most basic element of a good drawing and should be done correctly. Imagine your frustration when, halfway through the shading, you realize that the position of the features was wrong.
